Ride photoIt was to be a “Big Sandy” ride, according to the Club’s page, and conditions seemed perfect for that 60-mile loop beginning along the Little Spokane. Unfortunately, nobody checked with WSDOT, or whatever agency was responsible for closing a significant portion of Rutter Parkway for repairs.

But it all worked out OK. The initial part of the ride took the group through some of the best and most interesting areas around Spokane – up Rutter along the slow and winding route following the Little Spokane, occasional turns revealing spectacular, pastoral views across the watershed; afternoon light setting everything aglow, and cool, moist air providing respite from the day’s warmth. It was only after all this, when the group reached the Indian Trail turnoff, that the closure was discovered. So nobody really seemed to mind when the “Big Sandy” loop turned into a Rutter Parkway out and back ride. One could argue that the rideable section of Rutter was the best part of the loop anyway - and that might be true - but it didn’t hurt that Rick was the only one in the pack that had ever actually ridden the Big Sandy loop.

Mort and John somehow got lost on the way back, but found their own way to the chosen rendezvous – The Elk , picked because John allegedly had never been there.

After beer and appetizers, Mort found a random volunteer to shoot a group lineup which, by pure happenstance, seemed to dramatize the…shall we say…enormity of his new maxi-scooter? Frankly, being a Vespa club, we tend to find “maxis” almost antithetical to what we’re about – but then our desire to be inclusive kicks in, and we decide Mort’s personality makes up for what we, at least, consider his bike to lack. (Even Mort noticed the size of his bike in the shot, and added a nice little note of apology when submitting the image later.)

Nonetheless, maybe it’s time for a friendly nickname for Mort; a teaser for having purchased a bike the size of a Barcolounger, and still having the pluck to become a regular in a mostly Vespa crowd. Agree? Good-natured suggestions will be gladly received.

Next up: no ride next Thursday, but rides galore Friday through Sunday, July 21-23 at our second annual Spokane Scoot. As they say in those monster truck ads, beee theeere! dingbat
