This week's ride featured Mort in his first-ever ride lead role, plus some characteristic creativity and vigor. How so? Mort worked up pre-printed ride directions including a destination point and time, and "led" by sending riders out individually! Pretty cool idea, especially since it reminds us of what car enthusiasts call "rallies," and a bit of what motorcycle folks call "poker runs." The former features turn-by-turn directions, plus specific times associated with several check-in points along the way. The trick in car rallies (and the fun, if you've ever tried one) is to follow the instructions exactly enough to match your arrival times with the ideal times organizers provide. Finishers with cumulative times closest to the schedule win the rally. Poker runs are a little different, but also use pre-printed directions. Riders go from point to point along the route and stop in several assigned spots, but instead of being timed at each station, riders get to draw and keep an actual playing card, from which poker "hands" are built. At the end of a poker ride, participants gather and compare cards; best hand wins. We've attended and followed scooter events for awhile now, and so far, haven't seen either type of event tried. Mort's first weekly ride idea has us thinking...maybe something for Spokane Scoot 07? In any event, Mort says good times were had by all, and that the finish line featured Round Table Pizza at the 57th and Regal location. Kudos to Mort for trying something new, and for recognizing the power of pizza as finish line incentive! |
