Paul n' Barbie, Part II
We could say we were tired of riding scenic country routes, but that wouldn’t actually be true. Instead, we’ll just call the route Rick led the group on Thursday a work in progress, with half of the loop figured out, and the other half needing just a little improvement.

Cindy, Mort, Paul, Mark, Charlotte and Rick made up the pack this night, and a bit of the discussion early on had to do with the absence of regulars Brian, John, and Collin. Seems the first two were suffering bike troubles, and as far as anyone knew, Colin was still vacationing in Japan. Word is, Shaun’s attending to Brian’s bike, while John is waiting for a replacement tranny belt for his hot-rod Vino.

Rick all aglow...
Short and sweet. Those words characterize this summary of Thursday's ride, if not the ride itself.

With several of the regulars out of town on vacation, busy getting ready for the weekend, or with broken bikes, we knew turnout would be a little low. Even so, we’ve been surprised before and were hopeful for a half-dozen or so. Not this week. Just Mort and Rick were on-hand to fly the colors through downtown and across the West Plains.

Rick picked a relatively new route combining part of the trip out to Four Lakes with a return around the backside of Medical Lake. Frankly, it could become another new favorite. Scenery was fantastic, passing Willow, Granite, Silver, Medical and West Medical Lakes, not to mention several gorgeous wetland areas. Deer were abundant, as usual, across the State hospital grounds. The weather played a nice role, too – clear, sunny skies, cooler temperatures, and the shorter days now have the sun setting everything aglow, or in dramatic shadow (sorry, it’s the photographer in us that makes us say that…)

The return route featured travel along Electric Avenue, bordering the south side of the airport, which made a nice contrast to the slower-paced twisties we’d encountered in the first half. Rick noted the fact that a turn of the century trolley line between Spokane and Medical Lake gave the street it’s name.

Beer and appetizers at the Elk afterwards, then back home. If you weren’t there (and it seems many of you weren’t), you missed a great one! dingbat

Seen in Spokane?
A few months ago, Mark mentioned his desire to see Spokane become more two-wheel friendly, i.e., provide free parking or designate areas downtown for scooter or motorcycle parking. We loved the idea, and even posted a story about Mark’s notion.

Since then, we’ve learned of other US cities that already have such programs in place, including Denver (where Amerivespa took place this year and the Mayor reportedly rides a scooter), Ann Arbor Michigan, where motorcycles park free in designated areas, and Toronto, where all parking is free for two-wheeled transport.

Toronto’s case provides an interesting example for Spokane. Not long ago, the city was like most in North America, treating scooters no differently than Humvees. But one rider, Michelle Calvert, got fed up with the hassles of parking downtown and went public with her complaints. Calvert, a web designer and Public-Relations consultant, even launched a protest Web site called www.rockthescooter.com .
