vespa of spokane
How about a mugshot, VOS?
Another interesting item landing in our inbox came from someone we don’t know very well yet, but hope to get to know better soon - Mr. Rick Manfred, owner and all-round lead guy at Vespa of Spokane.

Says Rick:

“We would like to thank you for the great article June 25th. Since then, we have had Kevin Schulze attend technical training for Vespa and Piaggio scooters. We’ve also exceeded our sales goals for Vespa. With all the support and patience everyone has extended, we express our utmost gratitude. We still have some delays with parts, although this problem has improved dramatically. Next month we’ll be attending the annual dealer meeting in Arizona, and Vespa has informed us that there are some great new accessories coming soon.”

He went on to let us know that through the end of October, Vespa will include a two-year extended warranty with the purchase of most models, and invited everyone to drop in for a visit at either of their two locations – at 2405 N. Division Street in Spokane, or on Northwest Boulevard in Coeur d'Alene.

Oh My, Amerivespa!

Scooter thrills - and no chills
We’ve been putting off our post on Amerivespa for quite awhile now. Setting aside the self- analysis, let’s just say it’s a case of having too much to write about. Amerivespa is the largest scooter rally in the U.S. after all, and after you’ve ridden across Seattle with a pack of scooters exceeding 400 or so, words just come up short.

Now, weeks after the big event, things seem a little more manageable. We won’t even try a full write-up – that’s still an intimidating thought. Instead, we’ll just cover the highlights in no particular order:

Trade Show
We're embarrassed to say, but none of the group had ever attended an Amerivespa, so the sight of an entire convention center floor filled with scooter-specific booths full of gear, equipment, tools and printed goods had all mouths agape. Several showroom-shiny Vespas, from an early 50’s fenderlight to a brand-new GTS model, glistened in one corner, while another featured how-to repair demonstrations, including video of the work in-progress on a wide-screen TV. Marla and Paul trolled for tee-shirts, while Charlotte snagged a metal-flake, ET4-blue scooter purse Marla had been eying. At least two scooters (of the four given away during weekend) sold hundreds of raffle tickets: a restored Vespa GL decked out in Vespa Club of Seattle colors, and an untitled, never-used 2004 Genuine Stella, Atomic Fireball edition.

Thursday Night Ride

Hotter n' Hades
Like this, y'know...
Spokane's freakishly hot weather patterns returned just in time for this week's Thursday night ride. In fact, the day's official high of 102˚ broke the previous all-time record temperature, set just six years ago. Bummer.

But around 4:00 pm, ride leader Rick decided a changeup was in order, and instead of the longer "Big Sandy" loop, the ride was revised to meet conditions - and changed to "Big Shady + Scoop."

AC, for free: The group - just Rick, Mark and Mark this time - pushed off from the Baby Bar for a quick downtown tour, leading to the nearby Peaceful Valley neighborhood, to the aptly named Water Street, where gravelly beaches make access to the ice-cold Spokane River easy, and a quick dip really, really refreshing.

Next, the bunch followed the river downstream and up the Indian Canyon watershed - a shady, naturally-cooled area that follows one of the City's best greenbelts up to Garden Springs and Highway 2. From there, a quick crossover to Thorpe Road for a loop through some of Spokane's most proximate wheatfields (always cooler near these, for some reason).

Frozen treats: The final stop was for ice cream at The Scoop, in all likelihood the best home-grown ice cream and ice cream shop in town. Unfortunately, the place was closed for some bizarre reason (the sign said closed both July 4th and 5th), so a trip to the old national-chain standby, Baskin-Robbins was in order, where the group sat and chatted about classic versus new scooters until dusk and cooler conditions began to return.

All in all, a much better, even cooler way to spend an oppressively hot afternoon than holed up in some air-conditioned box. Really! dingbat
