Sean pix
Bottle cap or main jet?
Anyone who's spent much time around scooters in these parts has at one time or another witnessed Sean Nicol working his magic on a broken bike. He's been part of the Spokane scooter scene for as long as he's been old enough to ride, and even though he's part of the 2% gang, we've always regarded him as the most experienced classic scooter mechanic anywhere in the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area.

And since two-stroke motors are crazy-simple mechanically but can be crazy-complicated to get running properly, we're big fans of experience.

Sean's a busy guy, and it's always been tough to get a broken bike on his schedule. But we got a call from him recently with good news: he's set up a larger shop area behind his South Hill home, with the intent to build a little side-business repairing and restoring vintage euro-scoots.

So, if you're A) A two-stroke nut, riding a Vespa, Lambretta, or something more exotic like a Mitsubishi Pigeon, and B) Not attracted by the thought of long hours wrenching, troubleshooting and cursing that deceptively-simple classic bike of yours, Sean might just be your guy.

If so, Sean says get in touch, or like us, recommend him to others. He's at: nicol_rig (at) yahoo (dot) com. dingbat

P.S.: Of course, new Vespas are a whole 'nother thing...for those, we're big fans of Kevin at Vespa of Spokane.

2% News

2% logoOur cross-border, bad-boy rivals, the 2% Scooter Club of Coeur d'Alene, seem to spend most of their time chasing happy-hour PBR deals and spare parts for rat bikes.

So when they manage a bit of computer code, get the crew to write up bios, and get the digi-cams working for a major revision to their website, it's news. It's 2% news.

All rubs aside, the guys did a nice job on their new site. We especially like the listing for our own big rally, Spokane Scoot, featured right there on the front page. Plus, there's the latest info on the 2-crew's annual rally, Inland Invasion, set for June 12-16 at Farragut State Park, just north of Couer d'Alene. Sudsy good times guaranteed.

2% Scooters = scooterfag.com? Not sure we'd go there, but that's why there's a Bryce, Chris, Driscoll, Tommy, Sean and Chad. These guys specialize in taking things a bit beyond; a bit further than good taste would dictate, or as they define it themselves, to the level of "Jackassery."

Keep it up, guys. Congrats on the new site, and we'll see you this spring. dingbat

Google Street View Arrives!

street view
Zowie! We've been Googled!
Ever heard of Google Street View? Not long ago, it was a mere curiosity for us Spokan-eers, since the cool imaging feature was only available in major U.S. cities.

But it's here now, and after a few minutes online, all we can say is WOW!

OK, we'll explain. Street View is another of Google's internet viewing tools, accessible through maps.google.com - you know, the one with street maps, satellite views, and (sometimes) terrain maps of your favorite neighborhood. If Street View's available on the map you're searching, it'll show up as another little button next to the other view options at the upper right-hand corner of the screen. But despite its innocuous appearance, that little button opens up a whole 360-degree, zoomable world, anywhere the map shows a purple line. See that purple ink all over that satellite image of Spokane? That's the network of streets Google's driven and photographed in full-color, panoramic glory. Check out the view of the river near the Little Falls dam below, for example.
