Orin, at this year's 'Scoot
If you've been to just about any regional rally over the past few years, you've likely met Orin. Or, if you're a fan of the scooter blog Scootin' Old Skool, you may know Orin as its primary author.

Orin's been ailing recently, and posted a note on his Facebook wall about something sounding pretty damn ominous - a surgery related to his life with diabetes. Tonight, we received an e-mail from a close friend of Orin's with some good news about the outcome:

Friends:

This is to update you on Orin's status after his surgery last Thursday. I am happy to tell you that all is well (given the circumstances), and that Orin is resting quite comfortably and is preparing for an expected followup surgery tomorrow to bind the wounds from his early operation.

To answer a few questions: Yes, this surgery is a result of diabetes, which, because of Orin's personal situation, went untreated for the better part of a year. Long story short, an infection in his right foot necessitated the amputation of the forward part of his right foot – all five toes back to the area of the first joint near the ball of the foot. Thankfully, the surgeons were able to keep the ankle, heel and much of the foot. He is expected to have full mobility, once tomorrow's surgery is complete and he finishes some physical therapy. We expect that he has another week or so in the hospital before he comes back to my house, where he has been lodging since late summer.

Orin is getting terrific medical care, courtesy of the Veterans Administration Medical Center here in Portland (it's better health care than I have, to be truthful!) His doctors say the surgery was "textbook" and without complications, and his prognosis is good. I am happy to report that despite this turn of events, Orin is upbeat, feeling good, and eager to get on with life.

Sorry for the long post. Thank you for being Orin's friends, and for caring about a special person.

Best regards,
Paul Nickell

A few posts back on his blog, Orin noted the arrival of a new motorcycle that would've fit his needs had it been available a few years back. Because it wasn't, Orin ended up buying a scooter instead. Times like this, we're especially glad to be part of something that comes with its own community, with good friends we enjoy, and that the same's happened for Orin - folks he'd likely never met on a motorcycle. Join us in wishing him a fast recovery. dingbat

Spokane Scoot '09 Recap

What we saw, Saturday
What, you mean after weeks of work getting ready for Spokane Scoot, leading rides and drinking way too much Red Bull, we've got to recap it all on the club website?

Of course.

While we're collecting our thoughts and sorting through hundreds of photos of this year's event, we'll offer what we've got already - that we all had a great time, enjoyed getting to know guests from out of town and from the Spokane area, considered ourselves lucky for the perfect weather, appreciated the hospitatality of our knucklehead neighbors, really appreciated the support and help of our club sponsors, and wished we'd had the time to lead rides south, west, or even north.

But we're also glad to be able to relax a bit, and start winding the season down.

Check back later for our official recap with the gallery and additional details. And be sure to check out Scootin' Old Skool's excellent write-up (thanks for the visit, Orin!) and Flickr shots.

Members, no rest yet...send your photos in to Rick. Pix uploaded to our scoot.net folder are OK, too! dingbat

Travelogue: Hamster Run

Running with Hamsters
If there was a club award for rally attendance this year, clubbies Paul and Jonna would win it, hands-down.

No, they haven’t been to six rallies. Or even three (so far). But the two they attended were a looong ways away. By that standard, figure Amerivespa, in San Jose, counts for at least four regional trips – it’s over 1,000 miles each way! And their visit to the Scooter Club of Bellingham’s Hamster Run should count for double, since that’s at least 700 miles total. So we’re spotting them for a six-rally commitment level, not counting this year’s Spokane Scoot, or the club’s recent Canada trip.

So kudos to Paul and Jonna for representing the gang at points well over the horizon.

Here’s Paul’s photo gallery from their Hamster Run trip. It’s a nice rally – several of the Minions have been in the last few years, and the Scooters of Bellingham group (SOB) are friendly folks. As a city, Bellingham rocks, as does the scenery, the town being right on the Sound adjoining the San Juan Islands. It does rain a lot there – moss replaces Rogaine for many a resident - and this year, about half of Saturday’s events got soggy.

Check out the images below, plus watch the video from last year's Ham-run. If you've never been to a scooter rally, they'll give you a sense of what to expect. dingbat
