Thursday Night Ride

Hotter n' Hades
Like this, y'know...
Spokane's freakishly hot weather patterns returned just in time for this week's Thursday night ride. In fact, the day's official high of 102˚ broke the previous all-time record temperature, set just six years ago. Bummer.

But around 4:00 pm, ride leader Rick decided a changeup was in order, and instead of the longer "Big Sandy" loop, the ride was revised to meet conditions - and changed to "Big Shady + Scoop."

AC, for free: The group - just Rick, Mark and Mark this time - pushed off from the Baby Bar for a quick downtown tour, leading to the nearby Peaceful Valley neighborhood, to the aptly named Water Street, where gravelly beaches make access to the ice-cold Spokane River easy, and a quick dip really, really refreshing.

Next, the bunch followed the river downstream and up the Indian Canyon watershed - a shady, naturally-cooled area that follows one of the City's best greenbelts up to Garden Springs and Highway 2. From there, a quick crossover to Thorpe Road for a loop through some of Spokane's most proximate wheatfields (always cooler near these, for some reason).

Frozen treats: The final stop was for ice cream at The Scoop, in all likelihood the best home-grown ice cream and ice cream shop in town. Unfortunately, the place was closed for some bizarre reason (the sign said closed both July 4th and 5th), so a trip to the old national-chain standby, Baskin-Robbins was in order, where the group sat and chatted about classic versus new scooters until dusk and cooler conditions began to return.

All in all, a much better, even cooler way to spend an oppressively hot afternoon than holed up in some air-conditioned box. Really! dingbat

Saturday Ride: Valley Chapel

What June days were made for
Our most recent Saturday ride (June 30th) was advertised as a “picnic ride,” but as it turned out, the main picnic was the ideal weather, idyllic scenery and near-complete absence of cars.

Ride leader Rick was a bit worried about numbers at first, since most of the group was out of town, entertaining visitors, or involved in one of Spokane's premier summertime events, the downtown B-Ball extravaganza, Hoopfest. But while the turnout was low, the ride – measured as a ride, versus our Mother’s Day wine tour – was probably the best one this year.

Roll call: Rick, Brian, Brian’s new girlfriend Crystal, and a new face we’d been corresponding with but hadn’t met yet named Mark (not to be confused with Marc, or Minion Mark…we’ll have to sort this out later).

Meetup: The group rendezvoused at the Rocket on Cedar for a little pre-ride coffee, pastries and (for Mark) a fruit bowl. BTW, Mark arrived in grand style, a touch after 10:00, and astride the nicest Lambretta we’ve ever seen in person – a Li 150 Series III – the one with the slimline engine cowls, our favorite. Mark’s new in Spokane, having moved here from Cincinnati this spring. He’s also a former member of the Ten Year Late Scooter Club, and apparently a patron of some mighty fine Lambretta restoration services back in Richmond, Virginia. His bike had only recently arrived via the mover’s truck.

Spokane's new Vespa dealer?
If you’ve been following Spokane’s misfortunes with Vespa dealerships – and especially if you’re one of the numerous local owners of a new automatic Vespa – this should be of great interest.

Recently, we heard that a new dealership was being established here, from the proverbial ashes of the former Camp Motorsports stock. A call from Bryce Rich, one of our friends from the Two-Percent club, indicated that the folks who had been selling Camp’s former stock were in discussions with Piaggio USA on getting a new dealership started and would be in attendance at the Inland Invasion rally.

Sure enough, two of the principals from the operation were there, astride demo Vespa GTS 250i bikes. We had a chance to meet and chat with them, and here’s what we learned:

Rick Manfred and Mike Cole, the two fellows putting the dealership together, represent the Dollar Rent-a-Car outlet on North Division selling the Vespa stock formerly held by Camp Motorsports. According to Rick, sales had progressed so well that they decided to investigate the possibility of ordering more bikes and getting a dealer franchise here in Spokane. In fact, said Rick, Dollar’s outlet in Coeur d’Alene seemed a perfect place to rent Vespas, and they hoped to extend their offerings there, too. Both wanted to stress they weren’t and aren’t affiliated with the former Camp operation.
