Good for you, good for Spokaloo! Q: How is Spokane like a scooter?A: It's not the fastest thing around, but it gets there eventually. Amazingly enough, Spokane's doesn't have cycle-specific parking Downtown. Commuting on your motorcycle or scooter receives no more incentive from the City than say, driving an H2 Hummer. Short-term parking? Gotta find an empty 20 foot-long stall like anyone else, or (gasp!) break the law by parking on the sidewalks, finding an un-used, un-marked space, or sharing a space with one or more other bikes. Stall-hungry drivers have been known to knock bikes down trying to squeeze into leftover space where motorcycles are parked legally, or more often, shoot dirty looks at riders as they take up an entire on-street space.
But that's about to change, even if only a little bit. In the wake of the new Downtown plan - which in draft form, supports two-wheeled parking arrangements - the City's getting ready to subdivide a few existing car stalls into dedicated motorcycle stalls. Being considered are five spots: |

It's Ride to Work day. Do It! Credit Orin of Scootin' Old Skool for helping us find this one. Seems Wednesday, July 16th is national "Ride to Work" day. The 17th annual such event, in fact.
And no, we're not talking about Spokane's recent Bike to Work month/day, though that's very cool, too. Nope, this one's just for scooters and motorcycles - basically a day for folks to ride en masse in order to showcase our existence, and to highlight the many benefits of commuting on two wheels instead of four. But perhaps the nicest part of our discovery is the fact that the event is promoted and supported by a Minnesota-based non-profit group that maintains a really great resource website on the subject (at www.ridetowork.org, 'natch). A recent perusal turned up a user's forum covering everything from parking to rider safety, a newsletter, press release templates, and a cool merchandise store featuring R2W logo goodies. Plus, there's a wealth of interesting factoids on the benefits of scooter commuting, including this one: |

Driscoll = T-Bag Bear? It's not often you see Vespas associated with the "I Saw You" section of the personal ads. It's even rarer to see an ad describing a "ratty Vespa sidecar rig with bullhorns." So imagine our pleasure to see just such an ad, describing the rider as an "American bear" and knowing full well that the only such Vespa in town belongs to 2% Erin. Here's the full text of the ad, from this week's Inlander: "American Bear on a Vespa: On your ratty Vespa sidecar rig w/bullhorns in front of Irv's. You saw me in the bar & shot me Reese Witherspoon eyes. You can mushroom stamp me anytime. Roooar!!"
"Reese Witherspoon eyes?" "Mushroom stamp me?" We don't understand the terminology here - and aren't sure we want to - but adding to the prominent display of the "I (heart) Tea-Baggin" sticker on his pink-strapped helmet (which we DO understand), we're wondering if maybe there's some sort of code also associated with white sidecars...and bullhorns. Who placed the ad? Don't know, but whoever did, thanks for the laughs!
