Grand guardians of the vault. We'll get this out of the way fast, to help keep egos in check. But following last month's annual meeting and elections, we're happy to announce our 2009 slate of Minion officers, namely:
Mark S. - President (back for a second, dynastic term) Scott L. - Vice-President Karen L. - Treasurer
Seriously, congratulations and thanks in advance to these three for volunteering time and effort to lead the group for another great riding season. An event planning session is scheduled, but it already looks like there'll be double the number of rides this year, at least one long-distance group tour is planned, the Ride & Seek challenge is back, and of course, the annual Spokane Scoot is a go for September 11-13th. (Mark yer calendars!) Dues due? Get 'em in soon, along with your member form. Paid up or just ready to ride? Watch the club calendar. Looks like our first official ride might happen St. Patrick's day weekend. |

Some stuff should never mix. So maybe you've seen this image of a motorcycle and car, pretty much blended together. It's been making the e-mail forwarding rounds these days.Though scootering is usually a slower-speed, fun-first activity, we thought we'd use this opportunity to remind ourselves that at pretty much any speed, a two-wheel versus car collision is a very bad thing, and that fun-first doesn't work unless safety actually comes first. The pictures below, according to the e-mail we got, are from a collision that occured in Sweden, where the rider, travelling at an estimated 150 mph, T-boned a car with such force that the rider and both occupants of the car were killed instantly. The wreckage was saved by police for display at a recent Stockholm Motorcycle Fair.
With the 2009 season still a few weeks off here in Spokane, we figure it's as good as time as any to share items like this. Lots of time for more cheery stuff later - especially if everyone keeps riding smart. Motorcycle & VW crash pix (Flash™ gallery) |

It’s a box o' versatile! Cleaning engine cases, carbs and other dirty/scaly parts has always been a pain, and more often than not, results aren't all that satisfactory. For instance, oxidized aluminum can be completely free of dirt and grime, but will still have a slightly grey or even whitish appearance.
Bead and soda blasting has always been an option, but it's kinda expensive, and taking irreplaceable parts into some shop where you're never sure whether the guy doing the work will somehow screw things up ain't a comfortable idea, either.
But we found this little DIY article today - and for us air-cooled, resto-crazy, budget-minded scooterists, it looks like a great solution:
Homemade Soda Blaster - "Nate's Aircooled Tech"
Now, not all of us have air compressors (or even garages). But like the proverbial buddy with a pickup, there's likely two or three folks we know with compressors. And phone numbers. Look out, Mark! |
