Brian's "wrap up" pose Last one of the year. End of a 22-week string. Yup, tonight was the night Thursday Minion rides ended for 2006, and maybe the fact that limited daylight forced equal parts riding and socializing was the best way to end the night-ride season. Mark was there, as were Brian, Naci and Rick. After a little bit of meet and greet, including congratulations to Naci on his new son Kaya, the group pushed off for what Rick termed a South Hill “Mansion Ogle” ride that covered most of that area’s neighborhoods. A couple of surprises – one bad, one good – were in-store. Regarding the former, Nanci and Mark had a minor collision arriving at one of the ride’s many stop signs; thankfully, no-one was hurt, but Nanci’s bike did come away with its first minor leg-shield dent. As for the good stuff, neither Nanci or Brian had ever visited tiny Pioneer Park, which features spectacular views of the City - especially at sunset when the group happened to be there. (Mark offered his own, more colorful history of Pioneer Park, but you’ll have to ask him in-person.) |

Sorta like this. With just two Thursday rides to go, it was a bummer to see temperatures drop, skies turn cloudy and light rain begin to fall that afternoon. But having been fooled once by Spokane’s weather, we were determined to show up and give it a go.
Just Colin and Rick showed up on-time, and with daylight at a premium, pushed off at 6:15 for a new loop including areas north that might be a choice for next year’s Spokane Scoot . Heavy coats, gloves and jeans were necessary to ward off cold that while perhaps tolerable in winter months, felt awfully strange in mid-September. The route carried the two up Monroe, past Country Homes (when were these last actually in the “country?"), north of the Whitworth campus to Dartford Drive, just west of the Wandermere golf course. From there, Rick led as far up West Hazard Road as daylight allowed, then returned back to Country Homes via Dartford, passing Commellini's restaurant along the way.
Cold? Yup. Dark? Headlights were nice to have. Rain? Nope. In fact, the wettest part of the ride was likely downtown, where a burst water main earlier that day still had the intersection of Main and Howard fairly soaked. The only other notable item was the white-tail deer that jumped across the road in front of the two scoots, along (the appropriately-named) Hazard Road.
Back downtown, the folks at Far West Billiards served up some really great appetizers and beer to wrap things up while Colin elaborated on the finer points of Japanese Anime’, “Host” bars (a job he says he’d love to have), and the fact that he met Yumi, his close-to-being fiancée because he was two minutes late to a Minion ride last year.
“Just ‘cause there’s just two riders doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun,” said Colin.
No doubt. |

We'll keep this one handy... Hey, this has nothing to do with rides, bolts or scooter nuts, but it's BIG news for the group. Congratulations to Nanci and Alicia Seyhanli on the arrival of their first baby, a boy delivered just last weekend! From Alicia's e-mail to us today:"We have a very healthy baby boy! Sunday September 10th at 9:55 p.m. he arrived a week early at 6 pounds 12 ounces and 19 inches long. His father drove round trip that day from Spokane to Seattle and back and made it in time for his delivery. All is well here for the sleepless in the Seyhanli house. Oh, yes - his name is Kaya Seyhanli. Tell everyone a new minion has arrived." Alicia and Naci
Very cool, and best wishes to all three. We look forward to receiving photos in our e-mail box, and seeing Kaya soon!
